WHITE CHRISTMAS, DECONSTRUCTED →
I just watched White Christmas with my brothers and Amy last night, as it is a major Christmas tradition for us Zimmerly Bros. We used to haul the VHS out sometime in October or November and then watch it weekly until Christmas, at which point we would put it away for a few months. It’s pretty much the only movie I still watch on VHS and I’m amazed that it still works! Every time we...

Confession
I still haven’t seen The Dark Knight.
He wasn’t drunk on liquor, just drunk on what he liked - crowds of people...

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion is starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and...

THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD
by Chad Perman
There is a certain kind of film that, if done well, I am bound to fall for each and every time, that plays to some inner note within my heart that never fails to respond accordingly. I’m not sure precisely what it is that resonates so soundly in these films - and it’s not for lack of thinking about it, I can assure you - but then again,...
Life as an Internet Scavenger
I walked half an hour in -25°C weather to get to a place with free wifi and it turns out McNally-Robinson bookstores are more in support of internet censorship than the Chinese government! What gives?!

The dork in the back with the purple stripes is my brother. I’m excited to see him in two days. And yes, I would let him be my hero.
I spent much of last night in the Club Car watching the Northern Lights, talking to an elderly man about Jean-Luc Godard, Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson. Seriously, train travel is the best.
Oh, by the way, Winnipeg is really, really cold. Who knew?
Internet surfing is not a crime
I was just told to “move along” by a security guard. I guess I was just shredding the information highway too hard.
Seriously, I get hassled less when I’m riding my board!
Next stop: Winnipeg!
Sitting on the ground outside a closed Starbucks using their free wifi.
Waiting for a train to come take me from this place of final exams, sleepless nights of writing, caffeine shakes, slushy sidewalks and hurry, hurry, hurry.
Waiting for a train to whisk me away through the frozen Canadian Shield to a land of heavy duvets, big meals, cold air that freezes your eyelashes, afternoon naps,...

Turkey
Always an adventure. It’s 9 o’clock and the feast is about to begin!
I just used a power saw to chop vegetables. That makes me a man, right?
Tonight
The Chatterbox is having turkey dinner and I don’t think we’ll be able to eat it all. Who wants to come over for a Christmas feast?
I should add that, while I’m still trying to figure out this impulse, I’ve been blogging in one form or another since July 27th, 2005. That post makes me feel weird and also makes me realize how much I’ve “grown up” since then.
